Fight Anxiety With This Simple Biblical Formula
How Psalms 32 and 91 Teach Us to Overcome Anxiety Through Prayer and Praise
If you struggle with anxiety, first let this be clear: you are not alone. Anxiety is a common battle, even among faithful believers. But Scripture reminds us that anxiety doesn’t have to control us. God has given us a biblical formula to fight back.
Anxiety steals faith, kills hope, and slowly erodes joy. That’s why we must be equipped with the Word of God, not just to understand anxiety, but to actively fight it.
In this post, we’ll break down Psalm 32:6–7 alongside Psalm 91:14-15, revealing a simple, powerful strategy for overcoming anxiety through prayer, praise, and God’s protection.
A Biblical Formula for Anxiety: Pray, Praise, and Rise Above
Let’s begin with Psalm 32:6–7:
“Therefore let all the faithful pray to You while You may be found; surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them. You are my hiding place; You will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.”
Psalm 32:6–7
These two verses contain a clear progression, a formula for what to do when anxiety strikes.
Step 1: Pray in the Moment
“Let all the faithful pray to You while You may be found.”
When anxiety hits, our instinct is often to escape, distract, or suppress the feeling. But Scripture tells us something different: pray immediately.
The best time to find God is in the moment, not after the anxiety passes, not later in the day, but right then.
When you pray in the moment:
-
You interrupt anxious thought patterns
-
You invite God into the situation
-
You shift from panic to dependence
Prayer is not avoidance: it’s engagement.
Step 2: Praise God While the Waters Rise
Psalm 32 continues:
“Surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them.”
The “rising waters” represent anxious thoughts, the ones that build, spiral, and threaten to overwhelm you. But here’s the promise: when you pray and praise God in the midst of anxiety, the waters don’t reach you.
Why?
Because praise elevates your perspective.
When you praise God:
-
You rise above anxious thoughts
-
You stop ruminating and start remembering truth
-
You position yourself spiritually above fear
Praise doesn’t deny the problem: it places God above it.
Step 3: God Becomes Your Hiding Place
Psalm 32:7 says:
“You are my hiding place; You will protect me from trouble…”
When you pray and praise, God Himself becomes your refuge. You’re not just coping, you’re hiding in Him.
Psalm 91 echoes this promise:
“Because he loves Me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges My name.” Psalm 91:14
Notice the connection:
-
Psalm 32: Pray to Him while He may be found
-
Psalm 91: He acknowledges My name
Calling on God’s name is what activates protection.
Step 4: Songs of Deliverance = God’s Daily Help
Psalm 32 ends with this beautiful promise:
“…and surround me with songs of deliverance.”
Deliverance doesn’t always mean anxiety disappears overnight.
Sometimes deliverance looks like:
-
A worship song that calms your mind
-
A Bible verse that grounds you
-
A prayer that steadies your heart
God often delivers us little by little.
This mirrors Exodus 23:30, where God tells Israel:
“Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land.”
Your Mind Is Valuable Real Estate
The “land” God wants you to possess is your mind.
There is no more valuable real estate on earth than your thought life. Anxiety tries to occupy that land, but praise, prayer, and Scripture reclaim it.
Each time anxiety comes and you:
✔ Pray
✔ Praise
✔ Call on God’s name
You increase your spiritual capacity. You strengthen your faith. And over time, anxiety loses ground.
Psalm 32 and Psalm 91: God Is Consistent
Here’s something powerful to notice:
-
Psalm 32 was written by David
-
Psalm 91 was written by Moses
Different authors. Different generations. Same God.
God was faithful to Moses.
God was faithful to David.
And He is faithful to you.
Psalm 91:15 says:
“He will call on Me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honor him.”
Psalm 32 promises the same thing: protection, deliverance, and refuge.
When Anxiety Strikes, Remember This Formula
When anxiety hits, at that moment, that minute, that second, remember:
-
Pray immediately
-
Praise God in the midst
-
Call on His name
-
Receive His protection
-
Let Him deliver you little by little
God will be with you in trouble.
He will protect you.
He will deliver you.
He will honor you.
